The position responsibilities include project management, Timber Harvest Plan preparation and administration, resource assessment, and supervision of junior staff. Strong organizational skills as well as communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential. A valid driver’s license is required. ATV experience is preferred.

Wildlife Biologist
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: This position surveys and monitors for special status species on various environmental compliance projects; collects and analyzes biological data to determine project level biological impact constraints and assure that negative impacts are avoided, minimized, or mitigated. May also be required to conduct Forestry Technician field work to implement Timber Harvest Plans (THPs) and other forest management projects.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
● Conduct Northern Spotted Owl (NSO) surveys and monitoring.
● Cares for and maintains rodent colony and feeds live mice to NSOs.
● Research agency records, databases, literature, and GIS to inform assessments.
● Observe, identify, and monitor species in the field, including special status species, wildlife identification, bird identification by sight/sound, vegetation mapping / habitat assessments, GPS & GIS mapping, and document environmental constraints analyses and compliance of projects.
● Ability to read, interpret, and apply sensitive species survey protocols.
● Compose and compile survey findings in reports.
● Conduct environmental compliance monitoring.
● Compliance documentation QA/QC.
● Reporting on biological surveys and monitoring.
● Integrate with the forester or construction teams to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
● Performs other duties as assigned by Operations Manager, Senior Wildlife Biologist, Forester, Senior Forester, and/or Stewardship Coordinator.
● Follows instructions, responds to leadership direction. Gives and welcomes feedback.

ABILITIES
● Safely navigates steep and difficult terrain in remote locations often in adverse weather conditions, requiring long hours of work when necessary to reach goals.
● Works alone or in small groups in remote areas at night (i.e. conducts night surveys on foot).
● Conduct general biological field assessments (often in adverse weather / terrain conditions).
● Remains flexible with the ever-changing workload, working conditions, and project requirements.
● Works well in group problem solving situations using reason when dealing with emotional topics.
● Excellent technical, writing and verbal communications skills; ability to compose project reports and other technical documents or a willingness to learn.
● Ability to collect and organize data, generate, and evaluate alternatives, reach logical conclusions, and formulate consistent recommendations.
● Possesses self-motivation, with solid time management, follow-through skills, and the ability to work against a deadline.
● Takes independent actions as appropriate and asks for help when unsure how to handle a situation or when a decision requires a more qualified expert.
● Proficient in MS Word and Excel.
● Assist with GIS data research, analysis and mapping.
VALUED BUT NOT REQUIRED ABILITIES
● Be able to mediate issues between competing groups in the field.
● Experience conducting the following specific biological surveys:
○ Spotted owl
○ Migratory nesting bird surveys including raptors
○ Special status frogs (Rana spp.)
○ Marbled murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus)
● Experience using specialized field equipment (i.e. relaskop, prism, diameter tape, clinometer, laser, chainsaw, ATV, etc.).
● Experience conducting plant, stream, and/or jurisdictional water inspections.
● Construction monitoring.
● Invasive species management.
● Wildlife handling.
● California General Permit and SWPPP Inspection.
EDUCATION
This position requires a bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) from a four-year college or university in Biology, Forestry, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or a related field.

COMPENSATION
NCRM offers a competitive hourly rate and compensation package with this non-exempt position. Hourly rate will be based on qualifications and experience, but ranges between $28-$35/hour.

Northern Spotted Owl Biologist
Northern spotted owl (NSO) surveyors are needed for conducting surveys throughout Mendocino and Sonoma Counties in Northwestern California. NCRM, Inc. invites applications for full-time seasonal positions conducting surveys for northern spotted owls (NSOs) in the beautiful coast ranges of Northwestern California. Pay is $25/hr - $29/hr depending on experience, special consideration will be given to individuals with spotted owl survey experience in addition to past/current certification with surveying for marbled murrelets.
Our office is located inland, in Ukiah. The work period is expected to last from mid-February to the end of August (with the possibility for extending to full-time, year-round work with benefits for the right person).
Most surveys will be conducted at night on lands owned by some of the nation's top forestland conservation organizations including: The Nature Conservancy, The Conservation Fund, Redwood Forest Foundation, Inc., and Save-The-Redwoods-League. Duties include conducting nocturnal surveys for NSOs using digital wildlife callers, conducting NSO reproductive status monitoring surveys and observing/recording color-band information of NSOs often alone in remote locations without access to communications infrastructure (cell phones, radios, and CBs), possibly assisting with capturing and banding, taking detailed notes, filling out data forms, entering survey data into tablets and various database programs on computers. Work duties will require hiking over steep and rugged terrain, orienteering with map & compass, and GPS units, working independently and as a member of a team while following detailed instructions and prioritizing workloads with varying and changing field conditions.
Successful applicants will have experience working with NSOs alone in remote areas often without immediate contact with fellow employees, operating and maintaining 4x4 vehicles and ATVs at night on rugged unimproved dirt roads in addition to operating chainsaws and a variety of other field equipment. Successful applicants will also have good computer skills, be able to work in harsh weather conditions, be physically fit and able to meet the rigorous demands of field work in steep, rugged terrain, able to adapt to a flexible day/night and nighttime work schedule, willing to work overtime, and occasionally on weekends and/or holidays. The applicant must have excellent communication skills (written and oral); able to accurately collect and record field data; and be able to work cooperatively with others, and capable of working independently with little daily supervision.
