NCRM is seeking a full-time Registered Professional Forester to join our professional staff.  The ideal candidate should have a successful track record of working independently on forestry projects, preparing reports, and providing professional advice to clients. The position responsibilities include project management, Timber Harvest Plan preparation and administration, resource assessment, and supervision of junior staff. Strong organizational skills as well as communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential. A valid driver’s license is required. ATV experience is preferred.

Entry Level Utility Forester

The position we seek adds to an existing collaborative team and works in conjunction with the North Coast Project Manager and Registered Professional Foresters. The roles and responsibilities of this position are often changing and as such requires some level of flexibility depending on the client’s needs.

Foresters will work closely with the Senior Foresters and the Project Manager (PM) for guidance and direction. The Utility Forester will work in the field 85-100% during the week and may include duties such as (but not limited to): training tree crews (TCs) and Pre-Inspectors (PIs) on the California Forest Practice Rules (FPRs), overseeing TC operations to ensure FPR compliance, flagging sensitive areas for riparian buffers, bird nests, or cultural awareness and ensuring proper documentation and communication of those work sites with the PM, QA/QC of tree work completed or of PI field reviews, and/or assisting with the Work Verification (WV) team. Daily communications with the PM and the other Utility Foresters are considered crucial as well as field documentation of onsite work. Weekly reports with field documentation and photographs are an expected as part of this position. Foresters should also become familiar with PG&E Best Management Practices (BMPs) and should eventually be able to provide interpretation for mitigation and remediation procedures for ground operations (public speaking).

Safety is paramount for this position and a culture of speaking up if you observe something unsafe is important. Daily Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) are required as is maintaining fulltime Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while in the field.

Main responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Promote safety procedures and a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar with or be willing to learn PG&E hazard procedures and notifications.

  • Learn and follow PG&E environmental procedures and notifications.

  • Interest in gaining knowledge and field application of the California Forest Practice Rules Act.

  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills for effective communication to stakeholders, Project Managers, utility company vendors, and utility company employees.

  • Properly report and provide updates to higher management.

  • Be proficient with handheld devices and programs on a computer system (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GIS, etc.).

  • Have the ability, or interest, to learn to identify local trees and shrubs, as well as some understanding of Threatened/Endangered species in the area.

  • Ability to work in adverse field conditions and steep and rugged terrain.

Northern Spotted Owl Biologist

Northern spotted owl (NSO) surveyors are needed for conducting surveys throughout Mendocino and Sonoma Counties in Northwestern California. NCRM, Inc. invites applications for full-time seasonal positions conducting surveys for northern spotted owls (NSOs) in the beautiful coast ranges of Northwestern California. Pay is $25/hr - $29/hr depending on experience, special consideration will be given to individuals with spotted owl survey experience in addition to past/current certification with surveying for marbled murrelets.

Our office is located inland, in Ukiah. The work period is expected to last from mid-February to the end of August (with the possibility for extending to full-time, year-round work with benefits for the right person).

Most surveys will be conducted at night on lands owned by some of the nation's top forestland conservation organizations including: The Nature Conservancy, The Conservation Fund, Redwood Forest Foundation, Inc., and Save-The-Redwoods-League. Duties include conducting nocturnal surveys for NSOs using digital wildlife callers, conducting NSO reproductive status monitoring surveys and observing/recording color-band information of NSOs often alone in remote locations without access to communications infrastructure (cell phones, radios, and CBs), possibly assisting with capturing and banding, taking detailed notes, filling out data forms, entering survey data into tablets and various database programs on computers. Work duties will require hiking over steep and rugged terrain, orienteering with map & compass, and GPS units, working independently and as a member of a team while following detailed instructions and prioritizing workloads with varying and changing field conditions.

Successful applicants will have experience working with NSOs alone in remote areas often without immediate contact with fellow employees, operating and maintaining 4x4 vehicles and ATVs at night on rugged unimproved dirt roads in addition to operating chainsaws and a variety of other field equipment. Successful applicants will also have good computer skills, be able to work in harsh weather conditions, be physically fit and able to meet the rigorous demands of field work in steep, rugged terrain, able to adapt to a flexible day/night and nighttime work schedule, willing to work overtime, and occasionally on weekends and/or holidays. The applicant must have excellent communication skills (written and oral); able to accurately collect and record field data; and be able to work cooperatively with others, and capable of working independently with little daily supervision. NCRM is seeking a full-time botanist to join our professional staff and assist our senior biologist and foresters in all aspects of resource management such as: conducting floristic field surveys for special status plants and habitats, preparation of survey reports and permit application packages for submittal to the resource agencies, wetland delineations, and monitor construction activities. Additional off-season tasks may include assistance with our forestry projects. 

Candidates should have a relevant degree and/or experience as well as strong field skills (ability to navigate using map & compass and carry 30 pounds) and the ability to work independently in difficult terrain under all types of weather conditions.  The best candidate will have knowledge of Northern California flora, the ability to effectively use the Jepson Manual, and map plant communities. Knowledge of environmental regulations (CEQA, NEPA, ESA, MBTA etc.) and permitting is desirable. Strong organizational skills as well as communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential. A valid driver’s license and the ability to negotiate narrow mountain roads is required. ATV experience is preferred.
